Next Fest NW is Velocity’s new works series celebrating what’s happening in contemporary dance, movement-based performance and dance cinema in the Northwest. Next NW was established to support new work and investigate different approaches to dance. Through Next Fest NW, Velocity aims to foster a robust dance art community where artists have access to facilities, support and creative exchange. Proposals for installations, performances, live art and other formats welcome.

Each Next Fest NW presents 3-6 artists or collaborative teams, selected through a curated application process, for three public performances. Next Fest NW artists are fully produced in Velocity’s Founders Theater, receive up to 12 hours of free studio rehearsal time, receive a guaranteed honorarium; and benefit from promotional, administrative and technical support.

The theme of Next Fest NW 2014 is New West. See below for a description/inquiry around the theme from Velocity’s Artistic Director.

2. Respond to the following from Velocity’s Artistic Director (Limit 2000 characters):

Rather than describe the work you are going to make, please respond to one or more of the lines of inquiry below, in relation to the project you want to investigate / perform in the context of Next Fest NW: New West:

Is there a New West? What does it mean to make performance out of the vibrant culture of the evolving 21st century American West?

The West Coast’s influence on 20th century western dance is profound—from Californian mavericks Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham, to the Seattle hook-up of Merce Cunningham and John Cage, to Anna Halprin’s profound influence on the Judson Church movement, to the impact of San
Francisco’s Contraband and Joe Goode Performance Group on international generations of dance-maker activists . . . the impact of artists born, or bred, in the western states is remarkable. Does your work evolve from or celebrate this legacy?

As a new wave of dance artists emerges, west coast dance is primed to gain greater attention on a national scale. What are the aesthetic/ physical concerns of dance artists creating in the Northwest today? If in the past artists looked to the East for recognition, what happens when we aim our spotlight on how artists of the New West are carving their own paths?

In 1974, Robert Adam’s photographic project The New West became a landmark– forgoing romantic notions of the western landscape to depict an unsentimental, austere vision of subdivision sprawl and suburbia. How does your work respond to the expedient changes happening in the west, now? Or, what do you hope the New West might be?

I encourage the submission of projects that aim to provoke: provoke the sublime, or provoke beauty, or provoke questions, or outrage, or a profound sense of belonging. During Next Fest selected artists may also be invited to participate in establishing a dialogue with the public on current dance practices.
